The Carolina Calling puzzle by artist Dempsey Essick features a pair of cardinals on a blooming dogwood limb. In short, this 550-piece jigsaw puzzle is a cheerful spring scene.
About the Artwork
Cardinals mate for life, and this pair is perched together during nesting season. Their bright red feathers stand out against the white blooms.
In addition, the dogwood is North Carolina’s state flower, and the cardinal is its state bird. As a result, it’s a perfect tribute to the state.
Dempsey Essick paints every feather and petal with care. If you enjoy this design, be sure to look at his other puzzles in our collection.
Because cardinals stay in their territory all year, they’re one of the most familiar backyard birds in the Carolinas. Similarly, their cheerful song is a welcome sign of spring, which makes this puzzle a happy addition to any home.
Where to Start
Start with the border, then build the cardinals, using their red feathers as a guide, since it stands out right away. Next, work on the dogwood blooms. After that, piece together the branch and leaves. Finally, fill in the background, sorting those pieces by shade.
