About the Artwork

Sharks have lived on Earth for about 400 million years. When a shark dies, its teeth fall to the ocean floor and get covered with sandy sediment.

In addition, that sediment keeps out oxygen and bacteria, and the tooth slowly fossilizes over thousands of years. As a result, most teeth people find are gray, black or brown instead of white.

The tooth absorbs minerals from the sediment, and those minerals gradually replace the original enamel. Because it’s a photograph, every tooth in this puzzle shows that natural coloring.

Where to Start

Start with the border, then build the largest teeth, using their shapes as a guide, since it stands out right away. Next, work on the smaller teeth one at a time. After that, piece together any shells or sand details. Finally, fill in the background, sorting those pieces by shade.
